13 Different Looks 1 Barbie

By: Ema Nova, May 26th, 2023

Thirteen different looks, thirteen designers, and one Barbie. Margot Robbie posed for the cover of Vogue Summer Issue, the actress portraying everyone's favorite doll Barbie grant us a cover worthy of the title of real-life Barbie.

If you have been living under a rock for the past year or so, Margot Robbie is the actress playing Barbie on the big screen.

That's the doll that made its first debut in 1959 and ever since it has been every little girl's dream doll and collectible item. The company sold around 350,000 dolls in its first year. Until today, I still remember my first-ever Barbie and the joy of being able to have my own Barbie doll.

The doll is so iconic that only nine years after its debut of the doll they debuted their first black Barbie Christie in 1968. That was a time black dolls were not as popular, it took some companies years until they had a black doll in their catalog, something Barbie creator was already doing for years. In addition in 1997, they debuted Smile Becky, the first fashion doll to come with a wheelchair. These commitments to making their clients feel heard and seen is what makes Barbie so iconic and special to so many people.

This week, Vogue revealed they not only would have Barbie herself on their cover but that, she would be wearing thirteen different designers, a reference to the different types of personalities of Barbie.

WHAT A DREAM!

For the cover not only did Vogue go simple and classic on it, but they also gave us a Versace look. On the cover wearing Versace, Margot Robbie looks stunning, with a glow from another world. Of course, behind every great cover, there is a team of people that make things happen and for this cover, Margot was surrendered by the most creative minds in fashion.

For this cover, the editor was none other than Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, she is a Global Contributing fashion editor. If you are wondering what that is, She writes about any theme or subject and has no particular area of responsibility inside the magazine. Besides that, she can also suggest subjects for other people to write about. But that does not make Gabriella any less interesting on the contrary, she has been the editor of some amazing covers, and has worked as a consultant for many brands one of them being, Altuzarra. The brain behind the creative concept and design was Julia Wagner and the photographer was Ethan James Green. The article was written by Abby Aguirre.

Personally, the fact that they chose to do thirteen different looks taping into the different personalities of Barbies from the boss Barbie to a vintage Barbie was perfect. Barbie was one of the first dolls to play with different professions; therefore showing little girls that they could dream of being anything they wanted.

The editors decided to run from the obvious and cliche and instead, they did a simple campaign. If they had done otherwise there is a big risk that the campaign would be viewed as boring and predictable. One great example is Space Barbie and Barbie on her famous pink car both are Barbie staples, and the fact that they went in the opposite direction of what was expected is phenomenal. Instead of being tacky, they made it classy and timeless.

One of my favorite looks was Boss Barbie, I love that she is wearing Yves Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello the creative director of the brand always plays with the geometry of the blazers, and that is one of my favorite things about this picture. The most iconic part is that this picture in particular was not inspired by Barbie herself but by Charlotte Pickle.

Vogue presented us with roller skating fun Barbie wearing Miu Miu, cowgirl Barbie wearing Maison Margiela, Barbie wearing two different pink Versace, again boss Barbie wearing Saint Laurent, Barbie on her convert wearing Bottega Veneta, Barbe on a swimsuit wearing Marni and Norma Kamali, Space Barbie wearing Proenza, traveling Barbie wearing Marc Jacobs, president Barbie wearing Chanel which I believe is one brand that goes with the Barbie concept and we were excited to see this moment. They also gave us Barbie wearing Carolina Herrera and I love that they played with the proportions and that shot in particular looked very doll-like. Of course, a vintage Barbie is wearing Iconic Valentino, and Barbie wearing Christopher John Rogers.

Every single look was well elaborate, by the team and the concept was very clear. Vogue did make a great decision in choosing everyone that worked on this team.

Let me know which one is your favorite look, and which one was your favorite Barbie.

See you soon, with love...

Milênia!
