Aurora James is of Ghanaian heritage, and her love for African culture and craftsmanship has significantly influenced her career and design philosophy.

In 2013, she founded the luxury accessories brand Brother Vellies in New York City, with a focus on creating sustainable, ethically made footwear and accessories.

Brother Vellies is renowned for its dedication to preserving traditional African craftsmanship and supporting artisans from different African countries. The brand's designs often incorporate elements of African heritage, such as hand-woven textiles and beadwork, while combining them with modern, fashion-forward aesthetics.

One of the central missions of Brother Vellies is to promote sustainability and transparency within the fashion industry. James actively advocates for environmentally responsible practices and fair wages for artisans, fostering a positive impact on the communities involved in the production process.
