Schiaparelli Couture Fall 2023

By: Ema Nova

It’s no secret that Daniel Roseberry is an artist in fact I am always excited for haute couture week to see the Schiaparelli show and thank God, Haute couture starts with Schiaparelli. The show had personalities like singers, actors, influencers, and TV personalities.

Haute couture is the moment designers express their work through art since these pieces are not commercial. On the contrary, of a lot of designers, he (Daniel) always Takes this time to express his artistry.

He told Vogue magazine that “The idea of the last collection was really to suck the air out of the room. It’s what happened. I think the idea was to try to keep the focus on the collection and go deeper and deeper into the techniques we wanted to show.” He also called it a surreal interpretation of a woman's closet and continued by saying " I wanted to make an impossible wardrobe. Impossible not because it's not wearable, but because it's so extraordinary."

The Collection

Daniel Roseberry also wanted wants to pay tribute to surreal artists and highlight the long relationship of the maison with art. Through the collection, we can see art inspirations from Dali, Joan Miro, Yves Klein, Lucian Freud, Matisse, and Giacometti. without forgetting Elsa Schiaparelli's classic, surrealism.

The construction of each piece is undoubtedly perfect, the silhouettes and the jewelry looked terrific. Schiaparelli as always explored the provocative and dramatic part of art. Personally, I was in love with the gold bag, and the details on it were even more perfect when you take a closer look at it.

The fact that Mr. Roseberry even took his time to design or insert piercing as a detail made me gasp. When designers take their time to make even the smallest detail part of the experience, it speaks highly to the kind of artist Daniel Roseberry is.

Critique

It's hard to find something to criticize over such a perfect collection. However, when I look at this collection of pieces, I can't stop wondering if there is no African culture or even native south america inspiration. When we look at it through the couture eyes, yes it's unique and beautiful But It looks like something seen before. It's knowing that designers find inspiration everywhere but there is never any credit given when those inspirations come from African cultures.
