Dare I say Thom Browne gets the best designer this year for the met gala award? The designer made the biggest red carpet statements on the most watched carpet in the fashion industry.
The MET-gala, this year's theme was Karl Lagerfeld: line of Beauty. Last night he described Karl as a "singular talent." Therefore, we expected designers to pay homage to the late designer Mr. Lagerfeld, and it's fair to say that Thom Browne understood the assignment. Thom Browne dressed around ten people, including the model Sora Choi, singers Olivia Rodriges and Janelle Monáe, Wednesday sta Jenna Ortega, rapper Pusha T, the multi-talented Teyana Taylor, and others.
My favorite was definitely the Sora Choi gown, the same as the Vogue magazine editorial for this year's May issue that paid homage to Karl and wore by Shalom Harlow. One of the best looks of the night. I loved everything about the gown.
In addition to Sora Choi's amazing dress, the men's look did not disappoint. Starting with the basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who looked amazing, one of my favorite male looks of the night, Thom Browne understood the theme and ensured we could see the mix of his ideas and Karl's influence in each one of them. I loved that the references to Karl on Shai look to go beyond only the clothes to the glasses, pearls, and tweed on the jackets, boots, and bow.
Who knew the combination of Karl Lagerfeld and the Star of Wednesday was something we needed to see? Jena Ortega looked fantastic again in Thom Browne. This is truly the perfect theme for her. It helps consolidate even more her image as Wednesday Adams.
Again Thom Browner gave us tweed, silhouette, shimmer, and tie, all of this only on Teyana Taylor's look. Of course, the internet went crazy over the spin of the tweed. And the question is, when does she not slay?
Sometimes as we saw last night is hard to converge some brands or designers' ideas with other designers with a strong identity, like Karl. However, it's moments like this that should be praised every time.
Of course, there is Janelle with another amazing look that really pushed our perspective. My first thought when I looked at her on the carpet was that I was truly confused about it. I even thought it could be a critique of Karl's comment about overweight people. And that would have been a bold statement and critique of the designer. So it may or may not be a critique. But besides that, she also gave us a bikini moment as a reference to Karl's love for bikinis and how he would often bring it to the red carpets. Truly a stunning moment for the MET archive.
All of Thom Browne's look for the night, he was indeed the stylish winner of the Met Gala this year. He delivered the best material of the week.
